Playing Lessons
Welcome to playing lessons, a new section dedicated to fixing problems encountered on the course.
Swing Coach
If money was not an object, we would all have a swing coach that would stand around us at the range and watch us hit balls all day. Our swing coach would analyze our swing flaws and correct them at real time so that we can hit the ball better. We wouldn't be wasting a bucket of balls trying to groove our swing. Instead we would be getting better with every swing we make.
Ok back to reality. None of us think money is an object so how do we fix ourselves? My advice to you is to learn how to analyze your own ball flight. By learning how to watch your ball flight, you will be able to understand your swing better. By understanding your swing, you will recognize what you are doing right and wrong. You can then learn how to fix the problems that is causing your ball to fly errantly.

Ball Flight Patterns
What do you know about spins? For a right handed player, if you impart a clockwise spin on the ball, your golf ball will fly right. Similarly if you impart a counter clockwise spin on the ball, your golf ball will fly left. Note that the golf ball will not start flying left or right until it slows down in the air. The initial flight of the ball depends on how you deliver the club head. If it is square then the ball will travel straight. If it is open then the ball will fly right and if it is closed then the ball will fly left.
Coming over the top
A lot of golfers come over the top when they hit their irons and their woods and that includes me. Some people do it and don't know about it. They just think they shape the ball or that's their regular swing. Coming over the top means that your club goes inside on the backswing and goes outside for a brief moment before impact. This action imparts a clockwise spin to the ball which causes to ball to fly left at the start then turn right.
I've hooked myself up to the Zepp Golf sensor to see where I am going wrong. and as much as it is measured, I can't seem to correct myself.
I have been struggling at it for quite some time and I can tell you, it's extremely hard to not come over the top until now. I have found a tip from Paul Wilson that will instantly correct this and I highly recommend it.

I've tried it on the range and it works but I'll need to practice it more before taking it on the course. It takes a bit of getting used to but once it becomes second nature, you will stop coming over the top.
