How to Pitch in Golf
Every iron set comes with a club that is marked 'PW' which is short for Pitching Wedge. What is a pitching wedge? It is club that normally has a 53 degree loft and is used within 100 yards from the green. It is a very versatile club because you can use it as a pitching club as well as a chipping club. If you don't believe it, just leave it in your trunk on your next round and see how many times you miss having it.
The best way to learn how to golf pitch is to shorten your backswing and swing through to finish. The result will be a pitch shot that will fly about half the distance of what the club normally does with a full swing. When do you use it? You use it every time you need to get on the green and the distance away is too far for you to chip the ball.

After watching Clay Ballard's video on how to pitch a golf ball, get out there and practice your pitch shots. It is best to do your practicing at the range. Try to start at 20 yards and slowly go up to 30 yards, 40 yards then 50 yards. Get incredibly good at pitching 20 to 50 yards before moving on to 50 yards, 60 yards and eventually 100 yards. When you are ready to tackle the next phase, watch Paddy in the next video for his best tips.
The question in a lot of our minds is what is the difference between pitching and chipping a golf ball? When you are closer to the green, you normally chip the ball and when you are further away from the green, you will pitch the ball. Where is the boundary? Well, that's up to you and your ability. If there is a wind, you might want to keep the ball low. You might choose to chip a ball with lots of roll instead of pitching it. You could chip with a 5-iron and get the ball scooting on the green with very little air time but lots of roll. If you are still puzzled, watch this video and see it from another angle.
