Places to Play
Terra Lago - South Course
When in Palm Springs, be sure to play the South Course at Terra Lago. From the airport, head east on I-10 until you are in Indio. There are two courses to choose from and most players will choose the North Course because it has an island green and it was the site of the LG Skins Game with Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh.
There are two areas available for practicing. The main area is situated east of the parking lot and is used by most daily players. The second area is off the back nine of the South Course and is used by visiting groups or golf schools.
The driving range is ample in size and provides no mats to hit off from. The balls are provided by entering a code into one of two ball machines. There is a mobile driving range attendant to assist in case there is an issue. There is a chipping area and sand practice that can accommodate up to 5 players. There is also a large putting green off the cart path to the range.
Test your Course Management Skills
One of the reasons I like playing the South Course at Terra Lago is that it is a "thinking course". The "boxcar" hole is one of the most challenging holes in the front nine. Your tee shot has to be straight with water on the right and trouble on the left. A canal splits the fairway in half and has the green on the opposite side of the tee box.
After playing the course a few times, I leave the driver in the bag. I use a 4-hybrid to drop my tee shot about 200 yards down the middle. From there, I have an easy mid-iron shot to the green.
There are a lot of ways to play holes like this one on the South Course at Terra Lago. The long hitters will try to traverse the hole by going for the green. Other players will line themselves up then get on the green with a wedge, hoping to knock it close for a par. However you play it, it tests your course management skills. Well Protected Greens
The par 3's on the South Course is pretty challenging, especially the one in back nine. From the white tees, it is 125 yards but don't come up short because the green is well protected by sand bunkers that surrounds the green and the putting surface is on a mountain top with heavy slopes.
This is an excellent hole to keep your head still upon impact. Players who peek will lift their upper body and hit the ball thin. Don't make this mistake, especially here at Terra Lago where coming up short will easily short circuit your game.
